Stuck in addiction

Are you feeling bad because of your drinking or drug use?

Can't you stop taking more and more, even though the drugs have stopped giving you what they gave you in the beginning?

You've probably tried to quit or cut back several times. When your body, psyche and relationships have taken too much of a beating. But after a shorter or longer break, you're back to square one again.

Every part of your life is affected more and more negatively. And worst of all is the guilt of hurting and letting down those you love through your self-destructiveness.

THE ELEVEN TRAPS OF ABUSE

Do you recognize yourself?

Addiction is like being stuck in a negative spiral where increased problems lead to increased use, as an escape from problems, which leads to more problems, etc. Taking the drug provides relief in the present but greater problems in the long term. The inevitable crash is postponed until the consequences catch up and life collapses.

If you have a problem with alcohol or drugs, you probably experience several or all of the eleven traps that make up the destructive spiral of addiction.

At Narconon, we have a saying: what you can confront, you can overcome! Take the first step toward change by examining your own situation. Read about the eleven traps below by clicking to the right.

Below you can read stories from the abuse that our former clients have given permission to share.

*All names have been changed to preserve confidentiality.

" I see my wife and daughters in front of me at the kitchen table. Withdrawal is creeping in. I can't bear to look them in the eye. I can't bear to lie but I have to. I have to make them believe me. I make up a new brilliant lie. I have to try to find a solution to how I'm going to get out of my addiction. I see in their eyes that they trust me and my lie went home again. I'm starting to believe my own lies. The drugs are controlling me completely. I have to get help but what if they take the kids. My wife will leave me. The boss has been on me... maybe I'll lose my job."

AK

It's just a matter of stopping, right?

Developing an addiction or dependence on drugs is NOT a sign of character flaw or weak willpower, even though other unsympathetic people may have told you so in moments of anger and frustration.

DRUGS AFFECT THE MIND

Repeated use of alcohol and drugs leads to changes in the mind and brain that create compulsive desires to take the drug again and again. It can be said that large parts of the mind are kidnapped by the behavior of taking alcohol or drugs. Motivation, will, decisions, thoughts, feelings, mood, behaviors, etc. are strongly affected and become more and more oriented towards drug intake and patterns that are difficult to break.

Think about it. Sometimes you may think it's "you" who wants to use the drug. Sometimes you may feel like you really don't want to, but you take it anyway. Regardless, the initial impulse or craving doesn't come from "you," but from your reward system. Listen to the dialogue in your head that you have with yourself. "Oh my god, one more drink can't hurt!" Both the craving and the thought are not really you. They are automatic processes in your mind as a result of the drugs' effects on your thoughts, reward system, motivation, behavior, etc.

DRUG ADDICTION

Most people know how difficult it can be to resist cravings for something relatively harmless. Drug cravings in drug addiction are much, much stronger because the reward center is so strongly stimulated. Resisting drug cravings can be as difficult as resisting a strong phobic fear or other emotional automatic reaction. Research shows that different parts of the brain react completely differently in a drug addict to, for example, images of drugs, compared to people without addiction.

Therefore, you who are addicted need to receive a lot of support, empathy, knowledge and mental tools to consciously "reprogram" your mind and brain.

We at Narconon have the solution. Let us help you. To become drug-free for good.
